Starting A Coin Collection For Kids
Most kids enjoy collecting things. In fact, many will keep every paper they bring home from school and expect it to be treasured. If you deal with this situation and are often frustrated by it, why not turn your child’s need to collect into something fun that can be a bonding experience for the two of you? A coin collection is a great thing to start for your kids, and can often turn out to be a very valuable endeavor between you and your children. Below are a few tips to help you get a coin collection started for your kids.
Give Them A Variety
Kids don’t understand the difference in value between gold, silver and platinum coins. They will likely have something specific that interests them, and they should be allowed to run with that. Don’t stifle their need for diversity. Let them choose the coins they like, and not the ones you think would look good in their collection. Gold eagle coins, silver eagles, and the silver maple leaf coin seem to the more popular coins to start with. Remember the collection is about them having a chance to express their interests, and not a way for you to create something pretty with them.
Coin collections are great for all kids – even though who may not have a lot of money. Your child may be interested in quarters from different states, or coins with different presidents on them. Do a little research with your child and discover which part of the coin they are most interest in before you start the collection.
You could start with a U.S. Presidential Coin Album Folder or the State Quarter Map – Us State Quarter Collection
Get Them The Right Supplies
In order to preserve the coins your child values the most, they will need a coin folder or coin book to hold all of their new coins. Make sure to let them be involved in the process of picking out the folder or book to ensure that they get what they want. Make it as much about them as possible, and ask for their input every step of the way.
Do Your Research Together
There are thousands of sources available for children to learn about coin collecting. Take an afternoon and spend some time reading over some of this material with your child. Do your research together to find out the supplies you will need, where to find your coins, how to care for them and how to present them. This will create a bonding experience and you will value the time you have spent with your child collecting coins.
Raid Your Pockets And Jars
Before you start looking outside your home for certain coins, make sure you look at what you already have. Encourage your child to go through all the change jars and purses in the house. If they are looking for a specific coin, they may be surprised at how easy it is to find it. Every time you visit the grocery store, allow your child to sift through your change to find any coveted coins.
You don’t have to run right to the nearest gold coin dealers or spend large amounts of money to start a valuable coin collection for your children. The value you get from starting this endeavor with your child comes in the time you spend together and the moments you create. And you may be surprised at the value of some of the coins you turn up.

What a great idea! When my oldest nephew was 4 I taught him to look for the State Quarters so he would always hoard them for me I’d ‘buy’ them from him. It was fun and I used the opportunity to teach him to count money, how to count in 5 and 10’s and eventually I taught him to budget. It was a great way to bound and hang out without him realizing he was learning anything! Making learning fun can be a challenge but this was actually pretty easy! Especially when his mom started letting him ‘buy’ treats from the Munchie cabinet! Little boxes of raisins or peanut butter cups with crackers, little things like that. It was great and he still remembers learning to count this way! We found out a week ago I’m gonna be a great Aunty and he told me he hopes he’s half the dad as I was an Aunty because, and I quote, I ‘ruled’ LoL
Saundra McKenzie says
