That “play” is great as long as we as parents can guide them into the fun educational learning play to help them develop the technical skills they will need in this world when they become adults. The Ozobot is the toy for the this generation of kids.

Ozobot brings tech play into their world. It is more than just playing a game on an app. This is an actual one-inch robot that moves kids from augmented reality back to physical play. Really, this would be a great gift for anyone, kids and grownups alike will find Ozobot’s games  to be a strategic and competitive fun time.

Designed by electronics company Evollve, the robot’s capacity for fun and learning are endless. Playing with this tiny bot introduces kids to simple (or complex) coding, expands their imaginations and encourages life skills such as deductive reasoning. Like Dorothy following the yellow brick road to Oz, kids use color –black, red, green and blue — to program Ozobot to follow a path forward, backwards, fast, slow, right, left and more. So clever is the technology that the bot can move on physical surfaces like paper and digital planes like an smart phone or tablets. As long as there is a colored line or digital flash codes of red, blue, green or black, Ozobot will move at the command of the color or pattern of colors.

We received the Ozobot Creative Fun Robotics to Learn & Play – Dual Pack to facilitate this review. Inside the box is 2 Ozobots, 2 standard cover skins + 2 limited edition skins, game & instruction cards, 2 protective carrying cases, 2 custom micro-usb cables.

Additionally, we received markers and print outs you can print from the Ozobot Gamezone Print & Play  page for additional fun! 

What You Will Need/Want to Play

Here are the Apps you can use to play:

  • OzoLuck App • Free available at both Apple Store and Google Play, a social game of chance in which Ozobot travels on a maze and randomly chooses lucky outcomes
  • OzoPath App • Free ~ a strategic game to try to out maneuver your opponent to get Ozobot to home base
  • OzoDraw App • Free ~ a drawing and exploration app to test Ozobot’s intelligence

You will need to use an iOS or Android device to play any of the free apps, and that while Ozobot does work on phones, tablets really do work best as far as being able to see the game boards.

No worries if you do not have a smart phone or tablet device though, this product also works great with colored markers on paper, which I think is one of the amazing features about it! Simply start with a plain white paper, and thick RED GREEN, BLUE & BLACK markers. They also have this website page with great videos you can watch to learn how to better draw fun mazes!

Our Opinion

Ozobot is designed for kids ages 13+ but, trust me approved for adults too! This tiny customizable robot comes to life when you create mazes, tracks and playgrounds on paper, game boards and digital screens. Of course all of you are familiar with Mr. H. He just turned 9 years old and I do believe this will be a fun toy for him this Christmas. As long as I am there with him to help him play it will be great fun!

My suggestion…if you happen to be buying anyone in your family a tablet this holiday season grab an Ozobot to go along with it! With astonishing color sensing technology, this little bot uses a micro USB based rechargeable LiPoly battery. They only took about a half hour to fully charge then they last 90 minutes of continuous operation on a single charge. 

TIP: The only problem/issue I had with the Ozobots was getting them out of the package. lol I know I am silly but, it took me forever to figure out that when you press on the plastic holder of the Ozobot you SLIDE IT FORWARD. I was trying to pull it straight up. 🙂 

Since you actually do not have to have a phone or tablet to play these are great for a family fun day!! 

  • Game Idea:
    Have two family members draw a maze on a piece of paper. You can make rules saying you have to have so many inches of maze.
    Then race to see who’s Ozobot finishes first!
    Super easy yet super fun and educational!!
