I had a thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy done today. I just want to put it out there that it was NOT bad at all! Really! They did not numb me and it only felt like a few small pinches.
Last night I had myself so worked up and worried! So, I went online to read up and searched on youtube for videos…..I do not recommend this! If you found this article from doing a search online…..stop searching!
The video I found was of this woman talking about how they did not numb her and the pain was just so overbearing. So, of course this morning when I discovered that my doctor was not going to numb me I wanted to get up and walk out! My husband convinced me the pain of the numbing medication was actually very painful in itself. So, the doctor offered to do the first needle without the numbing medication then if I could not handle it he would numb me.
The biopsy was not hardly painful at all. The anxiety that I had worked up in my head was really the worst part. He did three needles today and I was fine. It did feel like needles but they are not like a shot. They do not inject anything and are not trying to get a vein so really not a lot of pain at all. When the needle is inserted the doctor moves it up and down for about fifteen seconds in a very small range of motion.
I am a little stiff feeling this afternoon but not any kind of pain I cannot handle. Almost like I have strained my neck in someway, just a little sore feeling. You can see in the image above the entry points are hardly visible.
So for those of you searching the internet right now……..IT IS NOT THAT BAD AT ALL without the numbing medication.
Now the hard part —– waiting on the results.
UPDATE: Yeah!! It is not cancer! I am so happy right now. The doctor said we can watch it and decided on surgery later to remove it if necessary. I go back in six months. Thank you all for your support!!

May I ask you big is the nodule?
Tina says
I think the doctor said the MRI showed it to be a 4cm nodule.

Not knowing what to expect is usually worse than the procedure itself. Hope all is well.

I’m glad that it wasn’t that painful. I’ve made the mistake in the past watching videos and listening to procedures online that made me literally ill, so I can understand how you felt.
I hope everything is all right and I will keep you in my prayers.

You are so right about not looking things up online. I’ve been poked & prodded & had lots of medical tests. And I’ve learned everyone is different & can have a different experience with the same test. So I stopped asking around too much & just said a little prayer before my tests. Glad your biopsy went well & I wish you a good result.
