Who has time for a yard sell ~ not me! Plus, I have just never been a morning person and all yard sells start at the crack of dawn! I do not want to be up at 6 am on a Saturday morning. Plus, all the planning that has to go into it…..the stickers, tables to place everything, putting up signs or listing in the newspaper. That is just to much work I do not have time for!
So now that Spring is coming around and everyone is ready to do some Spring Cleaning ……what do you do with all the stuff you need to get rid of? I hate just to throw it all away! Some of the items the kids just out-grow or stop playing with are still worth money. So here are five tips to make a little money off your unwanted items.
Tip 1 ~ Send in unwanted clothes and shoes to ThredUp. You can send in your kids name brand clothes and get cash! If you place an order they will send you a return bag for free or you can have them just send you a bag.
Tip 2 ~ If you have any antique items try a local auction houses. Just make sure to always put a reserve, or minimum bid, on your item so that you are to make sure to get what you want out of the sell.
Tip 3 ~ Take all your unwanted books to your local used bookstore. You’ll get the most money for recent titles in excellent condition.
Tip 4 ~ Sell your unwanted DVDs, CDs and Games on Music Magpie. You can do a search on their Valuation Engine to get an instant value of your items. Ship in your items to them for free, then get paid by check. Easy as 1-2-3.
Tip 5 ~ Donate the rest! While this is not going to put cash in your pocket right now it will save you some money on your taxes at the end of the year.

I’ve never heard of ThredUp but with four children constantly outgrowing clothes they seem like a really easy way to make a little cash from their outgrown clothing.

Another tip, if you have the available time; is sell your “extras” online in a bulk lot. More people will be interested in your sale and you can rid your clutter in a quicker/simpler way. Just make sure you include the shipping cost in your total sale so that you are not stuck with “paying” someone to take your stuff.

Like these tips a lot. SOme things that are no longer useful can be sold for cash. Other stuff can be given away and we usually give to the Goodwill.

I take clothes that my kids don’t fit into, to my local consighnment shop and books and Cd to my local book store that buys them. Any items I can’t sell I give to Goodwill or giveaway on Feecycle.

I’ve never heard of music magpie, but I’m going to look into it. I’m always looking into places to get money for old books, movies and music. I have a local store that I usually go to, but they don’t always give the best return. Thanks for the tips!

Great tips. I also found several Facebook groups of local moms that exchange, buy, and sell among themselves (mostly kids’ clothes and toys) as well as a few groups for those looking to sell other items. It can also be a great way to save money on getting things you need. Groups on Facebook are very often overlooked, but can be a great resource.

I always sell my book’s at half price book’s and get a pretty decent price. The Music Magpie sounds like a great idea, I will be checking them out, thanks for sharing that idea as well. As for donating, I do that weekly, I have so much stuff!

Those are all great ideas, unfortunately our local used book store doesn’t pay much for books, we took in the entire collection of Harry Potter books in mint condition and they wanted to give us $10 for them all! Poop!
